Local 1 company chosen to install new custom elevator on Liberty Island

PATERSON, NJ – (July 26, 2017) – New Jersey-based elevator company, Liberty Elevator Corporation has been awarded the prestigious honor of installing a custom elevator at the new Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor. The new $70 million building, set to be open in 2019, is generating extensive donor support.

The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Foundation, Inc. (SOLEIF) together with the National Park Service/ U.S. Department of the Interior commissioned the new construction project, designed by architecture firm, FXFOWLE.  ESI Design is tasked with designing the interactive interior exhibitions, while the structure will be built by Phelps Construction Group. The sustainable new museum will feature a rooftop garden, a bird-safe glass exterior, and sit 500 feet above sea-level. It will be constructed using native Liberty Island materials and have the capacity to withstand hurricane-strength winds.

Liberty Elevator is no stranger to Liberty Island, having installed three new elevators at the Statue of Liberty during the 2011 Life and Safety Upgrades. This particular project was the second time the Muttart family, Owners of Liberty Elevator had the prestigious honor of lifting Lady Liberty; the late Douglas K. Muttart installed the original elevators in 1986. Liberty Elevator recently completed elevator work at Ellis Island, where the existing two hydraulic and two traction elevators were removed and replaced with four new machine-room-less (MRL) elevators. When the opportunity arose for Liberty to return to Liberty Island, the independent company leaped at it.

This design-build job will feature a two stop, custom elevator designed to accommodate the museum’s heavy transportation volume. Liberty’s extensive experience with custom elevator designs and installations, coupled with their work history at Liberty Island, made them the clear choice for this historic installation. The elevator work is expected to be completed summer of 2018.
